Back (again) by popular demand!
As a self-confessed Mac enthusiast, I'm often asked what applications for the Mac I recommend to increase productivity, have fun and do cool stuff. Hence, I compiled this list to help you find the best free, or at least very cheap, software for your Mac. Because I first compiled this a while ago and I often check out new
freeware/
shareware there has recently been a major revision of this list.
Obviously, this list isn't much use to PC users - sorry guys, get a Mac! (Some of these applications are available on the PC though).

Adium*
Adium is a free instant messaging application for Mac OS X that can connect to iChat, MSN Messenger, Gmail, Yahoo Messenger and more.
AppTrap*
Like
AppZapper but free and simpler. Completely uninstalls programmes from your computer, just drag your unwanted applications to your trash can and it will do the rest.
Audacity*
Audacity is a free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder. You can use Audacity to: record live audio; convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs; edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, and WAV sound files; cut, copy, splice, and mix sounds together; change the speed or pitch of a recording and more.
AudioHijackPro
Allows you to record audio from an application (e.g. iTunes, Skype), the web (e.g. MySpace). Useful if, say, you buy music from the iTunes store and want to remove the DRM copy protection. The free version lets you record up to 10mins continuous audio, which is good for most.
Bean*
Bean is a free lightweight word processor that's clean, simple, easy to use and doesn't take up a lot of space on your computer.
Burn*
Burn data, audio and video disks and make disk images. Useful for copying and sharing music, DVDs and more.
Caffeine*
Caffeine is a tiny program that puts an icon in the right side of your menu bar. Click it to prevent your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen or starting screen savers. Essential for when watching movies in VLC Media Player or on YouTube etc.
Carbon Copy Cloner*
Those who have the newest Mac operating system, Leopard, will be using Time Machine to back-up their data. The rest of us might consider the excellent Carbon Copy Cloner.
Delicious LibraryCatalog, browse, and share all your books, movies, music, and video games in a beautiful, simple interface. The best feature is that you can use your webcam to scan the barcodes of your DVDs etc into your library and it enters all the information for you!
Facebook Exporter for iPhoto*
Very simply, allows you to export your photos to Facebook straight from iPhoto.
Firefox*
The most popular web browser of them all! Or you could try
Camino*, which is based on Firefox but has a more Mac-like feel and some other things going on.
Flip4Mac WMV* and
Perian*
Helps you play more file types (e.g Windows Media Player) in Apple Quicktime (get them both).
Handbrake*
An essential application for converting DVDs to MPEG4 so you can backup, copy and share your DVD or even put them on your video iPod/ PSP.
iTunes Alarm*
An alarm clock for your Mac that uses your iTunes library so you can wake up to any music (or internet radio station) that you like. And unlike
Awaken, it's free.
Lockdown*
A great anti-theft alarm system for your Mac, highly recommended for those who use their laptops in public places, such as coffee shops or libraries etc.
Unfortunately, it's only compatible with the newest operating system, Leopard...
MacTheRipper*
Rips (extracts) your DVDs to your computer, even protected ones, so you can backup, copy and share.
Monolingual*
Removes all the unneccessary language files (e.g. Zulu) on your computer, freeing up valuable hard drive space.
NeoOffice*
NeoOffice is a full-featured set of office applications (including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing programs). A great alternative to MS Office or iWork (though iWork has the excellent Powerpoint beater, Keynote).
Net News Wire*
A great RSS/ Atom reader that allows you to read your customised news feeds on your computer. For example, the Guardian website or your other favourite publications and sites. If you're not familiar with using RSS feeds, you should
check it out.
Quicksilver*
Essential. Get it, use, it, learn how it works. Create keyboard shortcust for anything from launch applications to controlling iTunes. Will change the way you use your computer.
RapidWeaverAn easy-to-use programme for designing websites, including podcasts, blogs, RSS feeds, forms... all from very simple templates.
Senuti*
Copy the contents of any iPod to your Mac!
Skype*
Voice conversations and instant chat. Free and simple to use.
The Unarchiver*
Unpacks archived (compressed) folders. Much better than Apple's default programme or Stuffit Expander; it's quicker, handles more file types and is more stable.
Transmission*
A simple, easy-to-use
bittorrent client. Download files for free over the internet (learn how
here). Download bittorrent files from
Bittorrent Monster or
Mininova.
VLC Media Player*
A cross-platform media player that works with most codecs so you can watch any kind of video format. I find it gives me better visual and louder audio than Quicktime and it's easy to use subtitle files with VLC.
* = free!
Not of interest to most, but if you're a web designer and work from a Mac, the following applications are well worth a look:
CSSEdit,
BBEdit and
Transmit (or the freeware option for an FTP client would be
Cyberduck*).
